On-farm pellet making has become a mainstream solution for small and medium-scale breeders worldwide. Self-produced compound feed features balanced nutrition, reliable safety and lower comprehensive costs. With the rapid development of global animal husbandry, more farmers choose to equip pellet processing equipment to achieve feed self-sufficiency and even run small local feed supply businesses for extra profits.

Why Produce Feed Pellets by Yourself?

Commercial finished feed always comes with high long-term breeding expenses. Meanwhile, mass-produced feed on the market often contains uncertain additives, with unstable nutritional proportions and inconsistent batch quality. Manufacturing customized feed pellets on your farm can perfectly solve these industry pain points.

Homemade feed allows full control over raw material selection and formula ratio, completely avoiding unnecessary chemical additives. Well-processed feed pellets effectively reduce feeding waste, lower dust-induced animal respiratory diseases, improve feed palatability and digestion absorption, and significantly boost the growth efficiency and breeding benefits of chickens, ducks, pigs, cattle, sheep, rabbits, and other livestock and poultry.

1. Standard Nutritional Standards & Practical Feed Formulas

General Nutritional Requirements for Farm-Grade Feed

Qualified conventional livestock and poultry feed should meet the basic nutritional indicators: crude protein ≥16%, crude fat ≥3%, crude fiber ≤6%, calcium ≥3.2%, lysine ≥6.5%, methionine ≥1.8%. For daily farm self-use production, strict laboratory testing is not required as long as the raw material proportioning is balanced and reasonable.

2. Common Raw Materials for Homemade Feed Pellets

Energy Supplement Raw Materials

Corn, wheat, barley, sorghum, oats, rice bran and wheat bran are the core energy sources of compound feed. These agricultural materials are easy to purchase locally after harvest, low in cost, and can provide sufficient carbohydrates to maintain normal metabolic growth of livestock and poultry.

Protein Supplement Raw Materials

Soybean meal, fish meal, crab meal, rapeseed meal, peanut meal and cultured yeast are high-quality protein sources. They effectively promote animal muscle growth, improve laying rate of poultry and increase the growth speed of fattening livestock.

Fiber Materials & Nutritional Additives

Alfalfa powder, dry grass powder, kelp, flaxseed, shell powder, edible salt and multi-vitamin premixes can balance dietary fiber, minerals and trace elements, prevent nutritional deficiency symptoms, and optimize animal digestion and absorption.

Adopting local raw materials for feed production can reduce farm feed costs by more than 30% compared with long-term purchase of commercial finished feed, with higher safety and flexibility.

3. Feed Pellet Equipment Introduction & Selection Guide

Feed pellet mill is the core equipment for feed processing, which is mainly divided into flat die and ring die types, applicable to completely different production scales and breeding scenarios.

Flat Die Feed Pellet Mill (90–1000kg/h)

This model is specially designed for family farms and small breeding users. It supports three power versions: electric type, diesel type and motor-free basic type, adapting to grid-powered farms and remote off-grid breeding areas.

Featuring small floor space, low investment cost, simple operation and convenient die replacement, it is suitable for intermittent small-batch feed production. Equipped with 2–10mm interchangeable dies, it can produce special pellets for young animals, poultry and ruminants in different growth stages, which is the most cost-effective equipment for farm self-use.

Ring Die Feed Pellet Mill (600–10000kg/h)

It is oriented to medium and large commercial feed factories and large-scale breeding groups. It supports 24-hour continuous high-intensity production and can be matched with fully automatic batching, constant temperature conditioning, cooling screening and automatic packaging lines to realize standardized and large-scale feed production.

Supporting Auxiliary Equipment

Pellet Food Maker

Hammer Crusher: Crush grains, straw and coarse materials into fine powder to ensure uniform feeding and better pellet forming effect.

Feed Mixer: Evenly mix grain raw materials, protein powder and nutritional premix to ensure consistent nutrition of each pellet.

Cooler & Screener: Cool high-temperature newly-made pellets, remove residual moisture and screen out powdered scraps to improve pellet hardness and storage performance.

Packaging Machine: Realize automatic weighing, bagging and sealing of finished feed, convenient for storage and sales.

For ultra-small backyard breeding, manual crushing and mixing are available, while matched complete equipment can greatly improve production efficiency and finished feed quality. You can contact us for professional equipment selection suggestions according to your breeding scale.

4. Standard 4-Step Process to Make Feed Pellets

With complete raw materials and supporting equipment, you can produce high-quality compound feed pellets according to the following standardized process:

Step 1: Prepare Nutritional Premix

Mix various powdered additives such as fish meal, active yeast, kelp powder, mineral powder, salt and shell powder in a fixed proportion in advance. The prepared premix can be sealed and stored for a long time for standby, or fully mixed with main grain raw materials at one time for direct production.

Step 2: Crush Coarse Raw Materials

Use a professional hammer crusher to crush corn, sorghum, peas, straw and other coarse granular raw materials into uniform fine powder. Fine crushing can effectively improve pellet forming rate and avoid die blockage. Small granular raw materials such as wheat and oats can be used directly without crushing.

Step 3: Uniform Mixing of All Raw Materials

Put the crushed grain powder and standby nutritional premix into the feed mixer for full stirring and blending. Small-batch production can adopt manual mixing. Uniform mixing ensures balanced nutrition of every feed pellet and avoids uneven growth of livestock and poultry.

Mixer

Step 4: Mechanical Extrusion and Pellet Forming

Put the evenly mixed raw material mash into the pellet mill. Through the pressure of the pressure roller and the die, combined with natural friction heating, the powder is extruded into solid cylindrical pellets. The built-in cutting blade can freely adjust the pellet length according to demand.

Note: The newly extruded pellets are high in temperature and moisture. They must be fully cooled and dried before sealed storage, otherwise they will easily absorb moisture and mold, affecting storage time and feeding effect.

5. Core Tips to Improve Feed Pellet Quality

Common problems in pellet production include loose and fragile pellets, excessive powder, poor water resistance and easy mildew. The final pellet quality is mainly affected by raw material ratio, equipment status, moisture content and pellet specification.

Raw Material Ratio

Starchy raw materials such as corn and wheat have natural bonding properties, which can enhance pellet hardness without adding chemical binders. Excessively high oil content will soften pellets and cause breakage, while excessive crude fiber needs fine crushing to ensure smooth forming.

Equipment Operation & Maintenance

Keep key components such as mixing blades, pressure rollers, dies and cutting blades intact before production. Worn parts will lead to loose pellets and excessive powder. Timely cleaning of residual feed and regular lubrication maintenance can effectively stabilize production quality.

Raw Material Moisture & Temperature Control

The optimal moisture content of raw materials for flat die pelleting is 15%–20%. Too dry will cause pellet fragmentation, and too wet will lead to die blockage and mildew. For ring die production, controlling the conditioning temperature at 80–85°C can promote starch gelatinization and greatly improve pellet durability.

Reasonable Matching of Pellet Sizes

2.0–2.5mm: Starter feed for chicks, ducklings, young rabbits and fry

3.0–4.0mm: Daily feed for adult chickens, ducks, laying hens and pigeons

4.0–6.0mm: Special feed for piglets and fattening pigs

6.0–8.0mm: Roughage pellets for cattle, sheep, horses and other ruminants
